Thermocline or thermal layer is a ocean water temperature change in certain depth, if you move past the thermal layer you might and often times will, lose sonar contact to the enemy, or that you can hide from the enemy on the other side of the thermal layer. For example when you're hunting enemy surface ship(s), stay below layer to remain undetected as long as possible.
Use thermal layer against submarines, when you combat soviet subs you have better sonar sensors, move other side of the thermal layer to gain an advantage, soviet subs cannot hear you as good as you can hear them through the thermal layer.
Thermal layer also reduces some transient weapon launch noise. Always good idea when going against sub is to be on the other side of the thermal layer.
