Magnetic Anomaly Detector or in short "MAD", is a dangerous device for any shallow running submariner.
Enemy aircraft MAD device is not capable of detecting below 500ft depth.
So this means that operating your nuclear attack submarine which is a big honking metal object, is extremely dangerous on shallow waters. Near the norway or soviet coastline and in South China Sea on chinese or taiwanese etc coasts you are forced to operate in shallow waters. This is a bad bad news, when a turboprop aircraft drops a torpedo on you all of the sudden after he just got a MAD hit on your subs hull, where do you go as you cant dive, your only option is to run like hell and pump out noisemakers while enemy keeps a close eye on you sometimes even visually if things get that bad, you are extremely lucky if you break contact and get away, I'm not saying it cant be done but be prepared for those half an hour to hour lasting torturing torpedo evasion sessions. I honestly believe that sometimes in South China Sea campaign chinese ASW planes run out of torpedoes which is when I finally make my escape, its just crazy.
I cannot emphasize how dangerous it is to navigate and operate in shallow waters with enemy aircraft in range or helicopters present from surface ships that have a MAD device.
To be completely honest with you... (don't tell no-one), in my casual relaxed "sub simming" sessions when I don't want to get stressed out, I simply refuse to get into shallow waters whether its in the 1984 Soviet or 2000 South China Sea campaigns/theaters. I just don't. Choose the time and place of the fight is easiest way to win the fight. When you are in Los Angeles or Seawolf class submarine in over 1000ft deep water, you are the king, you will humiliate those enemies with their puny torpedoes, just dive deep to avoid MAD contacts in the first place and if you get shot at, then full speed and torpedo evasion, easy. If you however are in shallow water... oh man, that stuff gives me nightmares, if a submarine cannot dive deep, for enemies its like shooting fish in a barrel, just pure horror.
I like the deep ;)
