ESM mast detects enemy radar emissions.
ESM stands for Electronic Surveillance Measures, however when you google it on 2024 it reads in wikipedia "Electronic Support Measures", err support, what frigging support? Like a bra for women? What kind of snowflake talk is this support talk, hilarious. I distinctively remember this from the 1980s being surveillance, as that's what it is, you surveil the radio waves for enemy signals. Anyways, just weird 2020's thing I guess, everything must be changed "just because" haha!
ESM mast can be raised when your submarine is within periscope depth, I believe its 50ft or higher (or less, which every way is the proper terminology). Your submarine has to run in slower speed, again cant recall the specific knots count but to be on the safe side turn to 5kts speed, get to 50ft depth and then raise the ESM mast.
Once ESM mast has been raised you immediately start interpreting those signals, also enemy radio emissions strength indicator appears on the screen (sorry don't have a screenshot right now). If enemy is right on top of you, he might, just might, detect your ESM mast. Always do a proper sonar sweep at slow speed to check if there are any nearby vessels, you do not want to stick your masts up within visual range of enemy ASW ship, that would be a bad day.
Gives estimated range to a contact. Basically same as periscope, might as well use periscope as its more interesting to look through it.
